Watershed Clean!
Please join us for the second of two
“Septic Socials” set for May 12, 2010

the Kittery Trading Post. There will be:
refreshments served

Local businesses and professionals will be giving an informal, but expert, presentation on
the generally unknown complexities of a septic system.

What Are Septic Socials?
Septic Socials are:
…workshops that suggest easy and inexpensive practices you can adopt to keep your
system running effectively and to also know when you have a problem. Not only can a
failing septic system cost you thousands of dollars and lower your property value, but the
pollution from them seeps into our local waterways, closing clam flats and causing
swimming bans. Results of these serious water pollution problems have been
documented in a report about Kittery’s Spruce Creek Watershed.

…happening everywhere. Septic Socials have taken place on a smaller scale in the Town
of Kittery as well as other towns in Maine, across the country, and Canada.

Still Curious?
Septic Socials are not all “potty talk.” People use their septic systems to dump all sorts
of stuff that just doesn’t belong there. Septic systems run on a complex and naturally
tailored assortment of “good bugs.” And pouring incompatible materials into your sink
or toilet can destroy these good bugs and lead to a failure of your system. Septic Socials
help you understand what these materials are.
Septic Socials are not a way for town officials to identify you or the problems you may
be having with your system. This is a public education program to help keep Kittery’s
water clean. If you are not comfortable asking questions at the social, you can get in
touch with a speaker at a later date.
If you own a septic system, congratulations! You are a sewer supervisor.
