The Waterline - May 2008
The Waterline

KITTERY, ME - Boat bottoms being painted and shiny topsides are a sure sign that boating season is just around the corner.

This spring brings some changes to the Kittery waterfront.  Long-time Harbormaster John McCollett has decided to swallow the hook and retire from the post he has held for seventeen years.  He will be replaced by me, Bion Pike of Cape Neddick.

John served during a period of unprecedented growth in the number of recreational boaters using our waters.  An even larger number of boaters have their names on a waiting list to receive a mooring in Kittery.  When John started there were only eighty-two names on a list that now numbers over one thousand.  Kittery boaters will remember John as a waterfront icon for many years to come.  Thanks John!

As a licensed captain, my waterfront experience includes windjamming on a schooner, sail training instructor, sailing and boat handling instructor, dock master, and manager of a mooring service company.  I look forward to meeting and serving the boating public of Kittery.  For boating and waterfront news, please check the Harbormaster's website.  Visit the Town website at www.kittery.org and click on town departments, then waterfront services.  Your input is welcome!  Send e-mail to kpa@kitteryme.org.

John and I are working hard to get floats repaired, mooring and waiting lists finalized, and launch the Harbormaster's boat.  Once finalized, the waiting list will be posted on the website.  Harbormaster hours at Kittery Town Hall for now are Tuesday and Friday 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., otherwise I will be at Pepperrell Cove.

Important Notice:  All boaters should be advised that the Navy and Coast Guard are holding a joint exercise in the Piscataqua River from June 9 through the 13th.  During that period, there will be several areas off limits to all boating traffic each day between 0800 to 1700 hours.  A map of these areas will be posted on the harbormaster website later this week.

Please stop by to say hello and don't forget your lifejacket!
