Topic: Critical Natural Resources 5.8
Meeting began at 6:15
Discussion Are existing regulations sufficient to protect the community’s critical natural resources threatened by development, overuse, or other activities?
Yes- through Land Use Codes, Conservation commission
Questions regarding cutting of trees as part of development- Should this be included in the permitting process?
Should the Growth Management Committee reach out to the various groups that are involved with natural resources?
Are local shoreland zone standards consistent with state guidelines and with the standards on adjacent shorelands in neighboring towns?
Yes except for language within the ordinance.
Suggest that the density of Badger’s Island be reduced to conform to the State Standards.
This would have no impact on the existing uses other than rending them non-conforming.
What non-regulatory measures can the community take to protect critical natural resources? Are there opportunities to partner with local or regional advocacy groups?
Protective measures include Land Use Codes, and partnering with advocacy groups such as Spruce Creek, Kittery and York Land Trust, and Conservation Commission.
Is there current regional cooperation or planning underway to protect shared critical natural resources?
Yes- Mount Agumenticus to the Sea Greenway, Rachel Carson and Kittery Water District
In what other areas will protection of critical natural resources advance comprehensive plan policies (e.g. water resources, economy, recreation, agriculture, and forest, etc.)?
Sea Point Beach being open to the public-State jurisdiction of littoral, Town jurisdiction of parking.
Fort Foster, which town department is responsible?
