The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides money to help low income homeowners and renters pay for heating costs.

The Low Income Assistance Plan (LIAP) helps low-income homeowners and renters pay for electricity costs by providing a credit on their electric bills.

MaineHousing’s Weatherization Program and Central Heating Improvement Program (CHIP) provide grants to low-income homeowners and renters to reduce energy costs by improving home energy efficiency.

The Appliance Replacement Program helps low-income people to reduce their energy costs by replacing older home appliances that are inefficient and expensive to operate.

MaineHousing’s Home Energy Loan Program (HELP) offers loans at a low fixed rate for home improvements that increase home energy efficiency.

KVCAP may also be used as a contact point for many of these programs

Home Energy Audit: Maine State Housing Authority operates a home audit program, which trains and licenses energy auditors.  The energy auditors are home inspectors who evaluate your home to identify areas where energy efficiency improvements can save you money. Certified energy auditors have taken a two week class and passed an associated exam.  Maine State Housing Authority can help put you in touch with an energy auditor in your area.  For more information, please give them a call.  MSHA’s energy audit program is one of two home audit programs in Maine.

CFL Light Bulbs
ENERGY STAR® qualified CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lights) are among the most efficient light bulbs available today. CFLs use 60% less energy to produce light, are cooler to the touch and last 6 to 10 times longer than standard incandescent bulbs.

Home Energy Audits

The Maine Home Performance with Energy Star® (MaineHP) is one of two home audit programs in Maine that links Maine homeowners with qualified, certified Evaluators who provide one-stop-shop access to a whole-house approach to home improvements.

Maine Home Performance evaluators diagnose what is going on in your home around energy use and comfort, indoor air quality, moisture and combustion safety. Like a mechanic or a physician, home performance evaluators use technologically-advanced tools to diagnose your home before making suggestions for improvements. Every home performance evaluator sets his or her own rates for evaluation and improvement services.

Solar Thermal Rebate (Hot water heater)
Solar thermal system designed to heat water and air qualify for a basic rebate of 30% of the cost of the system or $2,500, whichever is less. Solar incentives for ENERGY STAR and Maine Home Performance Homes are 35% of the cost of the system or $3,000, whichever is less. The commercial incentive is 35% of the system costs of $10,500, whichever is less.

Solar Electric Systems
Solar PV systems qualify for rebates of $2.00/watt for the first 1,000 watts, capped at $2,000.  These systems can be used to provide electricity to power your home.

(Note the solar thermal and solar electric programs are out of money for this year, but funding from the state should be renewed next year))
